It's March. Why is it snowing??

Earlier this month we were asked by the leaders of our church to pray and fast for moisture sufficient for the needs in our area.  We had so many wildfires last year, and it drained the area of water supplies putting them out.  There also has been a lack of snow and rain in our area, and so there hasn't been enough water to replace the water that was used last year.

The day after this special fast, it snowed.  It wasn't supposed to snow at all, and we got about an inch of snow.  Since then, we have been blessed with several days of rain and snow.  It has been wonderful to know that Heavenly Father has heard our prayers, and blessed us with the moisture.

Here are a few pictures of the last storm we had of super wet, heavy snow.  It was absolutely beautiful.

Swagbucks

So I discovered Swagbucks a couples weeks ago, and I love it.  For anyone who doesn't know what Swagbucks is, it's a website that you can earn "swagbucks" on, and redeem the swagbucks for gift cards (like Amazon), and other things.  It's kind of like a credit card cash back reward program, but you don't have to have a credit card.

You can watch videos, play games, use their search engine, check out products, and answer polls or surveys.

I KIND OF cheat because I just let the videos play while I am at work (I've figured out you don't ACTUALLY have to watch them).  For every 10 videos you watch you get 3 swagbucks.  You need about 500 swagbucks to get a $5 giftcard.  But hey! A $5 giftcard over a couple weeks is better than none at all!

If you want to start a swagbucks account and start earning, go ahead and leave a comment, send me an email, or call/text me.  I can send you an invite (and then I get swagbucks for recommending you!)

****Update**** I found out recently that you earn more swagbucks if you refer people (which makes sense when I think about it).  I also discovered that they have TONS of baby stuff that you can redeem your swagbucks for.  Thought that would be kind of cool for all you mommas out there!

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

This old Hebrew proverb, and Doctrine and Covenants 88:119 have been on my mind quite a bit lately.  I have realized recently that I have kind of let the cleanliness of our home go to the wayside.  I went from being OCD about how clean our house was, spending all of my free time cleaning, to just ignoring the clutter and mess that were building up around me.  I was frustrated because I could feel it becoming more and more difficult to feel the Spirit strongly in our home, and I couldn't figure out why.  We were still striving as hard as we ever had to keep the commandments and to draw closer to God.

Then it hit me: there was so much clutter in our house that I was having a hard time focusing on matters of the Spirit instead of the mess around me.

It wasn't healthy to allow my house to go into complete disarray, but I also know that my compulsive cleaning prior was not healthy either.  So, I started a new goal.  Each week, Neal and I were to come up with a specific part of cleaning to work on.  My first one was putting the dish I was using in the dishwasher right after I used them rather than letting them pile up in the sink.  If the dishwasher had clean dishes in it, then I would empty it so I could put my dirty dish in the dishwasher.  Neal worked on putting away his clothes after he wore them (whether that meant in the laundry basket or in a drawer) instead of piling them on the end of the bed.

These things to work on have made us think more about how to clean as we go, and so even though they haven't been on our "list of things to work on," things like folding laundry right away, and hanging coats up, and wiping up kitchen messes have started happening, too.  Our room is more clean than I've seen it in a couple months.  Hahaha.

When I woke up this morning, I had a different feeling than I usually do when I woke up.  I didn't feel like I needed to jump up and spend the time before I went to work cleaning our house.

This was new for me.  I usually wake up, look at the clutter around me, and feel overwhelmed by it all.  Then I sit on the couch and watch TV until I have to go to work.  This morning I looked at our room and felt GOOD.  I came out to the kitchen and didn't see a pile of dishes in the sink that needed to be washed.  All I really NEEDED to get done was fold the last load of laundry that we did yesterday.

The best part is slowly, and surely, the presence of the Spirit is coming back more strongly in our home.  Our house isn't perfectly clean, and I don't expect it to be (unlike when I compulsively cleaned).  I know that we are doing our best, and progressing each day.

It feels fabulous!

Date Nights

In January, Neal and I were talking about our lack of restaurant diversity when we go out to eat.  We always, and I mean ALWAYS, go to Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, and on a rare occasion Red Robin or Lonestar Steakhouse.  So, we decided to come up with a list of 12 restaurants that one or both of us have not tried, and assign one restaurant to each month for our monthly "date night."

In January, we went to Famous Dave's.  In February, we went to Rodizio's for our combo Valentine's Day dinner/date night.  Neal had never been to Rodizio's before, and let me tell you, even though it is expensive, it is totally worth the price.  The meat was fabulous, and all of the other things they had were absolutely amazing.

Last night, we went down to the temple, and then went to Texas Roadhouse (our restaurant for March) for dinner.  It was pretty good, and a fun experience (PS, for those of you who have kids...Tuesday is kid's night, kid's meals for $0.99).

Wedding photos

Our friend Melissa needed a couple to do some wedding photos for her to add to her portfolio.  Neal and I figured, "We still fit into our wedding clothes and look like we could have just gotten married," so we contacted Melissa and set up a time and a place.

These pictures turned out gorgeous!  I absolutely love them!  The sun was in a perfect spot, and gave a beautiful light for these pictures :)

I don't have the pictures yet, but I will post the link to Melissa's blog here:

Things I learned the hard way this week

I have been debating writing/posting a blog about this for the past week.  I've decided to move forward with the post because I want to share what I have learned this week, amidst all of the saddness and heartbreak I have been feeling.  I also find writing rather theraputic, so I'm hoping this will help me out as well.  I won't give a detailed account of everything that happened this week, but I will explain the things that led up to my "learning experiences."

As most of you have probably heard, my sister-in-law (Neal's sister) Angela passed away Monday, Feburary 4, 2013.  It was completely unexpected, and came as a shock to all of us.  Angela spent all of Sunday with family: we had Olivia's baby blessing that morning, and the evening she spent with Shauna watching the Superbowl.  She seemed completely happy and healthy.  She even told her parents at one point that she was feeling better than she had ever felt.  We had absolutly no indication that we would get halfway through our day Monday before everything changed.  Neal's mom called us around noon to tell us what was going on, and Neal answered the phone.  I couldn't hear exactly what was being said, but I could tell something was wrong.

This leads me to learning experience number one: we will react in the way we are taught/trained to react.  Neal immediately handed me the phone and went into what we call his "technician mode," packing up the things that were strewn everywhere since we had been staying at my parents' house.  I immediately went into "dispatcher mode" while talking to Judy, trying to help her calm down until EMS arrived.  We were packed up and ready to leave in about 7 minutes.

The second thing I learned this week is that even when we don't feel like we are making a difference or touching people's lives, we are.  As soon as word got out about Angela's death, people started posting on her Facebook page about memories, and how much they would miss her.  By the end of the day Monday, there were over 400 notifications for her page, and it just continued from there.  We estimated around 800 people at her funeral.  Numbers that astounded us, and that we know would have absolutely amazed her.

The third thing I learned was how grateful I am for the sealing covenant.  I know that because of the sealing covenant, I get to see Angela again someday.  I also cannot put into words my gratitude that I know if anything happened to Neal, I would be married to him for time and all eternity, and that death could not part us.

The fourth thing I learned is that I need to do everything I can, everyday, to be as worthy as I can be.  I guarantee Angela had no idea she would be waking up in the arms of Christ rather than in her bedroom.  She didn't have time to prepare or to think about it.  This inspires me to do everything I can, each and every day, so that if someday this were to happen to me, I could look my Savior in the face and honestly tell Him I did the best that I could.

The fifth thing I learned this week is to love, unconditionally, and to tell people you love just how much you love them.  Hug them, give them kisses, hold their hands, spend time with them, whatever you do, show your love.  Don't worry about the small things that truly won't matter in five minutes, or even the next day.  There are so many things I did not tell Angela that I truly wish I could have, and so many things I worried about that truly did not matter.

The sixth thing I learned this week is how protective I can get of Neal, but also how there comes a point when I have to let go of the control and allow things to happen.  I would have given almost anything to take his pain and his worry away. I took the whole week off so I could be by his side every moment that he needed me.  The few moments I was away from him were difficult for me (because I would have been able to protect him from his own emotions anyway...that's logical...).  Tonight we both went back to work, and it was hard.  I can't really explain why, but it was, and it was because of us being seperated instead of together.

Speaking of work, I learned I have one of the best jobs, and a lot of my reasoning for that is because of the people I work with.  I texted the supervisor that I thought was on duty on Monday and even though she was on vacation, she still took care of all of my leave time issues.  On Wednesday night Neal and Shauna and Kelsey and I were up making the slideshow, and I had multiple coworkers text me and talk to me for a little while, which was super comforting.  We walked into the viewing on Thursday and saw a gorgeous floral arrangement from my "family at PECC," which I was not expecting at all.  When I got back to work today I read an email from a coworker that described exactly how I was feeling, and it helped lighten my burden just a little.  I truly have a second family at work :)

The last thing I have learned is how amazingly faithful my in-laws are.  They both have been such a shining example to me through a very dark week.  Yes, they are sad, but every word they have said, every action they have taken, has been with complete faith and trust in God.  We don't have any answers, and there is a  very real possibility that we may not get any answers in this life, and although answers would be nice to have, they have both made the comment that they are at peace and know that what has happened was God's will.

Throughout the week I was also reminded of many things that I knew already, but just needed a little confirmation.  Some of these things are that the Lord blesses us with tender mercies (especially in times of trial), there are many good people in the world who are quick to serve, and that I love Neal more than I can put into words.

So now come the awkward part - the part where I need to end, but don't really know how (this always has been my weakness...my English teachers always loved my papers until the ending).  So instead, I'll end with a song - a song that Neal and I have always loved, but that has even more meaning now.

Angela, we will be singing for you!

Christmas!!!!

We spent Christmas Eve with the Milligan clan.  We went caroling, and then spent the evening enjoying food and family.  Neal and I got to meet baby Olivia for the first time, and because we had a new baby the kids acted out the Nativity as one of the adults read Luke 2 (Neal played the donkey).  One of the best parts was SNOW!  That's right!  We had a white Christmas in Colorado!!

Neal as the donkey

Neal holding Olivia...don't know why it's so blurry :(

Christmas morning Neal and I slept in (hallelujah) and then opened our present to each other.  Neal gave my flannel pjs that I've been wanting for a LONG time, some Under Armor workout gear, the Bourne movies, new snowboarding boots, and a new stomp pad.

New pjs!  Yay!!
I gave Neal two new coats (one is a dress coat that I'm in love with...he looks quite dashing when he wears it), a Broncos shirt, and a new Gerber multi-tool (that is apparently the bomb tech version...it has a C4 punch).

We then went down to my parents house to open gifts, and then to my grandparents for dinner.  One of our favorite presents was a new addition to our little possum family.  World, meet Jep :)

All in all, we had a wonderful Christmas filled with joy and family.  It was so wonderful to celebrate the birth of the Savior, and to remember all of the wonderful things he did for us!
